Introduction

The ‘Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine: Osteopathic Evaluation and Manipulative Treatment of the Spine and Pelvis’: A Course for Physiotherapists’ is a 9-day (3x 3-day Module) largely practical, clinically oriented course for physiotherapists, introducing you to practical osteopathic evaluation and treatment techniques that can improve the quality and effectiveness of your patient care.

As practitioners, it is important that we expand our capacity to provide a variety of safe and effective therapeutic interventions to aid the recovery of patients. In this course, guided by a clinician with a strong academic and clinical background, you will develop practical clinical skills, and an understanding of osteopathy as a modern healthcare profession. This will include increasing your understanding of Osteopathy and its evidence base, it’s philosophy, principles and benefits in the healthcare environment and the key influencing factors for osteopathy’s development worldwide. We will also explore the physiological and mechanical responses to Osteopathic manual therapy, and the environmental, and biopsychosocial factors that may impact a patient’s response to this treatment approach. Whilst developing new osteopathic skills, you will be encouraged to draw upon your previous clinical foundations to facilitate integration of this newly acquired knowledge into the evaluation and management of your patients.

Patient safety is paramount in clinical practice. In this course we will learn the theory and methodology for patient screening, review of absolute and relative contraindications and cervical spine risk assessment. We will also examine the clinical reasoning that informs the application of osteopathic manipulative techniques and discuss developing a person-centred therapeutic plan of care through case studies.

In the practical part of the course, we will focus on osteopathic evaluation & treatment techniques for the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, and pelvis. This course will equip the participants with the necessary knowledge and skills to provide safe, effective, evidence based osteopathic evaluation and treatment techniques for their patients.

  • The benefits of osteopathic approaches to care in the clinical setting.
  • Physiological and mechanical responses to manual therapy.
  • Contextual factors in clinical practice: modulating the effects of osteopathic manipulative techniques.
  • Safety in clinical practice: patient screening, absolute and relative contraindications including cervical spine risk assessment.
  • Clinical reasoning informing the application of osteopathic manipulative techniques.
  • Developing a person-centred plan of therapeutic care: case studies.
  • Osteopathic evaluation and manipulative techniques for the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine and pelvis.
  • The anatomical regions that will be covered during the practical part of the course include:
    – Cervical Spine
    – Thoracic spine and costovertebral and costotransverse joints
    – Lumbar spine
    – Sacro-iliac joints
